How to select a Real Estate Agent

It does not matter whether a buyer is buying there first home or their 10th home, selecting the right real estate agent is critical when purchasing a home. Here in California there are thousands of real estate agents. Some agents have been in the business for 30 plus years and there are some Realtors that have been in the business for only 30 days. There are several factors to considered when choosing a real estate agent to work with; hopefully this will give you more insight.

For most people, buying a home will be the single biggest asset that they purchase in a lifetime. Which brings me the the first quality that you should look for in a Realtor.

1. Knowledge - does this Realtor know the market. Can this Realtor tell you factors about this area that can't be found online. Does he or she know of new listings that meet your criteria prior to them hitting the market? These are some factors that may aid you down the line.

2. Work ethic- does the Realtor run his or her business like a business or is selling real estate something that they do as a hobby on the weekends? Most of the best Realtors in America have a burning desire to be the best and work long hours to make sure that they clients are satisfied. If the Realtor is working less hours a day than you and vacations more often than you it may be best to continue searching for the right Realtor.

3. Confidence- real estate is a very unique business. Having a confident agent can go a long way. Listings agents like working with buyer agents that they know will get the job done. Buyers like working with agents who can negotiate the best price for them and make the transaction flow as smoothly as possible. Things do not always go as expected during a transactions, but having a confident Realtor who never quits on the deal may be the difference between a buyer getting a home or losing the home and possibly their deposit as well.

4. Experience- most people assume that the longer in the business the better the agent is. This is not always the case. Some Realtors have been in the business for 20 years but only sell one or two houses year and can rely on external income for survival. Experience should not be based strictly on age. It's important to factor in productivity.

5. Personality- throughout this process it's important to find a Realtor that you have a good connection with. There will be some long hours, some long drives, and tons paperwork so finding a Realtor that you like is key. Go with your gut feeling.
